Harry Maguire Not Longer Manchester United Captain

The manager of Manchester United, Erik ten Hag has withdrawn the captaincy handband from Harry Maguire.

In January 2020, five months after Ten Hag’s predecessor Ole Gunnar Solskjaer bought Maguire for £80 million from Leicester City, Solskjaer named him captain.

Portuguese midfielder Bruno Fernandes is expected to be named the captain of the Red Devils from this summer.

“Everyone at Manchester United thanks Harry for his contribution as captain over the past three and a half years,” the club added.

After the captain handband was withdrawn from the 30-year-old England international, He said he was “extremely disappointed,” but promised to continue to give his all while donning the Red Devils’ jersey.

“After discussions with the manager today he has informed me he is changing captain,” Maguire posted on social media.

“He outlined his reasons to me and whilst I’m personally extremely disappointed, I will continue to give my all every time I wear the shirt.

“I wanted to say a massive thank you to the Manchester United fans for all their brilliant support whilst I’ve been wearing the armband.

“Since the day I took on the role, three and half years ago, it’s been a huge privilege to lead Manchester United and one of the proudest moments of my career to date.

“I’ve done everything I possibly could to help United be successful – on and off the field. I will always be grateful to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for first giving me the responsibility and I wish whoever now takes it on every success.”

Maguire who played in 31 of the club’s 62 games in all competitions in the 2022–2023 season has untill June 30, 2025 before his contract at the club expired.

Harry Maguire, who started eight Premier League games last season, is reportedly moving to West Ham this summer but the London-based side are yet to make an official bid for him.
